Water looming in Himalayan Regions

The water crisis is looming in the Himalayan region. When you look into the context, there was the latest edition of the journal water policy, which has come up with certain updates, where they have conducted a certain survey in eight towns in the Himalayan region of Bangladesh, Nepal, India, and Pakistan, they came to a conclusion that this particular region shortly will have a lot of water issues and currently there is 20 to 70% of deficiency in the water supply. What are the reasons for water deficiency?
When you look into this particular survey, it speaks about two important factors. One is the unplanned urbanization, and it also speaks about climate change as the key factor. For deficiency in water, what is unplanned urbanization in the present scenario, what we see in the  Himalayan belts, there is massive deforestation that is taking place. So, this deforestation has it may actually lead to the degradation of the forest and this is leading to the construction of dams and hydropower projects. So, there is more developmental activity and there is less forest cover. As a result, there is a drop in water levels. The survey further points out that there has been encroachment and degradation of the natural water bodies. This includes springs, ponds, lakes, canals, and rivers. Why is there encroachment? Because there is a need for infrastructural projects in the form of dams as well as hydropower projects. So, when there is the construction of dams and hydropower projects, this is ultimately leading to encroachment and there is pollution which is further depleting the water resources. And also what you see is the growth disappearance of the traditional water systems like the stones pouch wells as well as the local water tanks, adding to the problem is the growing population to manage this growing population, people have come up with short term strategies, that is groundwater extraction, which is proving to be unsustainable. So, what the survey says is that in the future, about 50% of the population will be living in cities by the year 2050, where there will be tremendous stress for water availability has a result of what it gives a certain recommendation. So, the recommendation is for the holistic water management approach that includes the spring should management and plant adaptation required.
