Impact of Mauritius oil spill

There is a ship owned by Nagasaki shipping. It was carrying oil, which is about 4000, tonnes. This particular ship recently went and wrapped into a coral reef, and, ultimately, causing the oil spill in the Indian Ocean. More than a thousand tons of oil was leaked into this particular region in the environmentally protected marine ecosystem regions, and also the Blue Bay Marine ParkThis Blue Bay Marine Park reserve is one of the important wetlands of national importance.M Mauritius is one of the biodiversity hotspots. It has a high concentration of plants, animals, unique to this particular region.

So what would be the loss at the marine level? And what would be the loss on the economy we have to focus on. When comes to marine life, we have the coral reef, the coral reef is also called the rain forests of the sea. Because of the diversity that is present in and around this particular coral reef, and they will also protect the coastline from the storms and erosion. Due to the oil spill, also see coral bleaching, and ultimately harming the coral reef. Coral reefs and the marine ecosystem, are the major pillars of Mauritius tourism.

Now coral reefs are destroyed. We will see the number of people visiting in this particular region, and at the same time, 25% of the fish in the ocean depends on the healthy coral reefs. So the tourism is one of the major areas of the economy that we'll see adopt and at the same time fishing is also another major area of the economy, even that will see a drop as well. So the economy as a whole will also see some depreciation, when it comes to its activities, the tourism and fishing, which happens to be the mainstay in the economy are bound to suffer because of this impact.

Now when comes to the seagrasses, which are present in the shallow waters, and the mangrove trees. They are also impacted, because of this oil spill. And there are many other migratory birds, which come to Mauritius, and now they are also vulnerable because of this oil spill. These are some of the issues because of the oil spill.

But how should we clean it, what are the various mechanisms

Cleanup of Oil Spill:

Containment Booms: Floating barriers, called booms are used to restrict the spread of oil and to allow for its recovery, removal, or dispersal.

Skimmers: They are devices used for physically separating spilled oil from the water’s surface.skimming should involve removing the oil from the sea surface before it touches some of the sensitive areas. So whenever there is a water area where the oil spill occurs, immediately removing them.

Sorbents: Various sorbents (e.g., straw, volcanic ash, and shavings of polyester-derived plastic) that absorb the oil from the water are used.

Dispersing agents: These are chemicals that contain surfactants, or compounds that act to break liquid substances such as oil into small droplets. They accelerate their natural dispersion into the sea. Chemical dispersant where the chemicals are added into this oil spill area where they are broken down into minute components and these are ultimately consumed by the microbes to help Mauritius overcome this issue

Biological agents: Nutrients, enzymes, or microorganisms such as Alcanivorax bacteria or Methylocella silvestris that increase the rate at which natural biodegradation of oil occurs are added.

India has also sent Mauritius operations specialist equipment, consisting of ocean booms, river booms, skimmers, hilly skimmers, power packs blowers, salvage patch, oil absorbent, Griffin patch, and other accessories, specifically designed to contain the oil slick skim oil from the water, and also assist in cleanup.
